Here at EBS Marketing, it’s unlikely that we’ll go through a week without receiving information about Google changing or updating one of their services. They’re constantly tweaking their algorithms and announcing new updates to any number of their endless features. But as Google continue to look to perfect their products, the world-known search engine has decided to part ways with authorship in their search results.
After years of pushing authorship as a ranking factor, in which a user could link content on the web to their public Google+ profile, thus showing their name and photo in the search results, Google have finally announced the end of authorship.
Two months ago, we saw Google moving away from authorship in the search results; saying goodbye to photos and Google+ information – leaving a link and a the authors name. But now, in September, Google have announced that they are moving away from authorship for good.
John Mueller’s Statement
Google’s John Mueller discussed the changes saying: “We’ve gotten lots of useful feedback from all kinds of webmasters and users, and we’ve tweaked, updated, and honed recognition and displaying of authorship information. Unfortunately, we’ve also observed that this information isn’t as useful to our users as we’d hoped, and can even distract from those results. With this in mind, we’ve made the difficult decision to stop showing authorship in search results.”
Time to Focus on Schema.org
Now with Authorship no longer present in the search results, Google are encouraging webmasters to concentrate on structured markup such as Schema.org. This markup helps all search engines better understand content and webpages on the web – so if you’re still unfamiliar with rich snippets and Schema then now’s the time to check it out.
